Atkins provides a range of engineering services to support the safe and efficient operation of nuclear facilities. The principal disciplines include:

Atkins has been involved in delivering capital projects to all major nuclear operations. By integrating our design, project management, safety and environmental skills we are able to add real value to our clients business in creating sustainable assets. We are able to call upon core strengths in generation, transmission, distribution and master planning to develop innovative alliance. In addition Atkins provide safe engineering and design solutions for waste retrievals, processing and storage facilities.
These activities have been provided to AWE, Nuclear generation facilities and Nuclear de-commissioning projects.
ENVIRONMENT
Atkins provides a comprehensive ‘one stop shop’ of environmental skills required to support the Nuclear Licensees. We are committed to providing a service that is consistent, professional and of the highest quality.
- Compliance with requirements of Nuclear Installations Act and appropriate Site Licences.
- Environmental legislation, including Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA 93).
- Environmental services including, Best Practicable Environmental Option (BPEO) studies, implementation of International Standards Organisation’s Environmental Management System 14001 (ISO 14001) implementation, radiological and environmental impact assessment.
- Radioactive discharge monitoring.
- Chemical and radiological contamination assessment and remediation.
- Process, waste management and remediation engineering.
These activities have been provided to The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Radiological Substances Division (RAS), the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII), AWE, Nuclear generation facilities and Nuclear de-commissioning projects.
SAFETY
A comprehensive and integrated range of services utilising a multi-disciplinary approach and industry wide best practice in:
- Radiological protection reviews and advice
- Human performance and behavioural safety
- Hazard and risk assessment of nuclear generating and nuclear processing plant and operations
- As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) assessments and reviews
- Safety case development and assessment

In all site based activities Atkins is driven by a strong safety culture and a philosophy that ‘zero is sustainable’. This has been recognised with the achievement of a ROSPA award for outstanding safety performance.
These activities have been provided to The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, AWE, Nuclear generation facilities and Nuclear de-commissioning projects.
SUPPORT SERVICES
Atkins services focus on providing operational solutions by combining technological insight and business understanding. We provide extensive engineering and technical support to commercial (operational and decommissioned) reactors within the UK. Insight into site culture and commercial operations comes from a variety of sources including previous employment and secondments into the nuclear sector. Examples of services include:
