Detailed Engineering and Design for Offshore Facility Construction

Introduction

Atkins carried out front-end engineering design (FEED) for the development of the Al Karkara and A-Structure North fields for the Qatar Petroleum Development Company (QPD). Atkins was also awarded a detailed engineering contract for the facility by the fabrication contractor, Gulf Piping Company (GPC).

Client issues

The site is about 50 miles south east of Doha in the Arabian Gulf.  The problems faced in its future development include:

  • marginal fields
  • highly sour production
  • remote destination for oil
  • no flaring allowed
  • high water cut
  • fast depleting reservoir pressure
  • power generation and distribution.

Our solution

Atkins undertook a techno-commercial evaluation of 20-plus concepts for the facility, including the possibility of a tie-in to various third-party facilities.

  • FEED for the selected concept (three platforms, two jack-ups, three pipelines and two cables)
  • selection of execution strategy
  • EPC tender preparation
  • EPC tender evaluation assistance
  • RFQs for the long lead items
  • procurement assistance to the client
  • detailed engineering.

The outcome of this evaluation activity was the solution agreed with the client which comprised:

  • Oil to be routed to shore via third party pipeline, using sub-sea hot-tap tie-in.
  • Gas compression and injection back to reservoir
  • Produced water treatment and disposal to aquifer
  • Water flooding and ESP for assisted production
  • Gas sweetening unit and gas turbines for power generation.

Key Benefits

Atkins provided fast-track FEED, enabling project execution at a time when product prices were surging higher.

The FEED stage for the project is now completed, and detailed design is ongoing.
