Atkins helps shape future of Derby

DerbyDespite the recession Derby city centre is experiencing an exciting and remarkable transformation. £1 billion of investment has already been secured to make some of the most dramatic changes in the city’s history.  This rejuvenation is being guided by the Derby Cityscape masterplan,  which aims to meet the aspirations of a 21st Century City. Atkins will play a key role in helping the City Council and its partners ensure that the vision for economic and physical regeneration is realised.

Atkins was recently appointed to Derby’s public realm and transport plan framework, which forms part of the delivery of the masterplan. Under this framework it will supply multi-disciplinary services up to 2013 and a number of early commissions have already been made from this framework.  One of our first assignments is to deliver a regeneration strategy for Darley Abbey Mills and Stables which form part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site (WHS).  This is home for one of the most important building complexes in the Derwent Valley.  It dates back to 1789 and contains the most complete and unaltered surviving cotton mill complex within the WHS. It is used today by many different light industrial and office based businesses including a popular restaurant overlooking the river.

David Brierley, Atkins’ Framework Manager says “We are delighted to have the opportunity to help the Council and its partners take the City forward through a challenging and exciting period in its development. Derby is a great City and its position in the Midlands has improved significantly in recent times. We look forward to building upon our long standing relationships with the City. We believe the key to the appointment is our ability to supply high quality services locally with the back up of an international resource.”

Alan Smith,  Head of City Development and Tourism at the Council says, “Delivering a sensitive, sustainable and viable future for all of the historic buildings and parkland is one of the most significant challenges facing this part of the WHS.  The regeneration strategy for Darley Abbey Mills and Stables will help the Council and local community determine a clear sense of direction for the area.  We must ensure that the tranquillity and heritage value is preserved, whilst also turning this into a must see destination.”

Atkins is no stranger to helping revitalise Derby.  Recently we were involved in the transformation of the Silk Mill Museum, producing a conservation plan, fundraising strategy, access plan as well as providing “green” energy advice for the project. Currently we are helping deliver the first stage of the public realm improvements programme in the Full Street area of the City.

Clearly Derby is a city that is moving towards a new page in its rich history of innovation and Atkins will help deliver this transformation.
