Nuclear Power
I graduated from the University of Bristol with a BSc degree in Environmental Earth Sciences. In January 2005 I joined the Bristol office of the Nuclear & Power section of Atkins as a graduate environmental scientist.
Since joining Atkins, I have been involved in a wide variety of projects. Examples include providing environmental support for AWE facilities and completing data collection and analysis for an international reliability engineering programme.
I am currently working with the Environment Agency, assisting with the launch of a new initiative aimed at monitoring and assessing environmental performance within the UK nuclear industry.
The Atkins team has been assisting in the production of the Nuclear Sector Plan for a number of years. The project is an Environment Agency initiative designed to monitor and assess environmental performance within the nuclear industry by measuring key environmental impacts.
Initially I had responsibility for creating a reporting mechanism that was used by the operators to assist with their data collection. This involved a review of technical detail, computer programming, liaising with clients and lots of creativity. Currently the work involves data analysis use by the Environment Agency to implement industry-wide improvements. I will also be taking over in the project management role, a new discipline for me to learn.
This project has been a significant learning experience, requiring a broad range of skills and knowledge. I have enjoyed the responsibilities I have been given so far but know I always have the support of senior colleagues when required.
Atkins offers an excellent opportunity for graduates seeking a career in the environment field. We have a team of over 1,000 specialists working in a wide range of environmental disciplines and opportunities exist to work in these different areas. The company takes a great interest in professional development, and Chartership for graduates is both encouraged and supported.
