Our employees

We aim to be an employer of choice and provide an environment in which our people can flourish and succeed.

As a consultancy, Atkins is a people business and our continued success depends upon recruiting and retaining talented professionals from a multitude of backgrounds.

Diversity

Embracing wider diversity is one of our main priorities over the next five years.  This approach is seen as the only way forward for an organisation operating in today’s global, multi-cultural environment. Embracing diversity will help to:

  • support our international growth through improved understanding of our clients’ different cultures;
  • address the shortage of UK engineering resource;
  • encourage innovation through sharing different perspectives.

Our Diversity Steering Group, made up of Atkins employees from each major Group business segment, drives the diversity agenda to challenge policy and practice and make recommendations for change. Our goal in the longer term is to create a diverse leadership group, as befits a modern, multi-national organisation.

Recruitment

We continue to invest in our recruitment practices and we have won a number of UK awards, including:

  • Best Graduate Recruiter in the Built Environment;
  • Best Place to work in IT.

For the fourth year running we are one of The Sunday Times “20 Best Big Companies to Work For”; in The Times “Top 100 Graduate Employers” list we moved up to number 43; and we are among the “Top 50 Places Where Women Want to Work”.

We aim to win similar recognition in the other countries where we operate, and look forward to reporting our success in building a global reputation as a great employer.

Career development

We continue to invest in training and developing our talented employees – during 2007/8 our training investment target is 2.8 per cent of our payroll costs.

We also recognise that individuals want to progress in many different ways. At Atkins all career routes have equal status, whether they are in project management, in a technical discipline or in business management.

We maintain a focus on career mobility and actively encourage our employees to develop their careers by seizing opportunities in other Atkins business segments or geographical regions.

Reward & benefits

It is our policy to reward our employees fairly and in line with the markets in which we operate.  We continue to monitor our remuneration practices to ensure they are appropriate and competitive.  In addition, our range of core and voluntary benefits support greater flexibility in achieving better work/life balance.

Employee engagement

Each year, Atkins employees are invited to take part in our employee engagement survey ‘Viewpoint’. The survey is made available in English, Chinese, Swedish, Danish, Polish and Portuguese to reflect our employee base. In 2007 almost three quarters of the workforce responded, and our Employee Engagement Index - a measure of how our people view the company and the how they are contributing to its success - rose to 72.
