To understand, teach – to master, simplify
William Glasser, american psychiatrist, observed that we learn: 10% of what we READ, 20% of what we HEAR, 30% of what we SEE, 70% of what is DISCUSSED with others, 80% of what is EXPERIENCED personally, and 95% of what we TEACH to someone else. So it stands to reason, if you really want to understand something, teaching others is imperative.
My personal passion for the last 25 years has been to make buildings operate safely and comfortable for occupants, as well as to streamline the amount of energy they consume. People spend a significant amount of time inside buildings, which makes health and comfort critical considerations. Maintaining the proper amount of ventilation air inside a building—based on the use, size, and number of occupants—is a key factor in maintaining safe environment for people. But there is a delicate balance between maintaining the right air circulation requirements and controlling energy costs. This balance is what originally opened my eyes to optimizing building systems.
In 2002, I joined and became certified by the National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB), an international organization that focuses on making the indoor environment safe and comfortable for occupants, while allowing the building to operate as energy efficiently as possible. NEBB provides advanced-level certifications that have helped me increase my knowledge and gain valuable project experience. Each certification opens the door to providing valuable services to customers.
Joining NEBB was a great decision for me. In fact, I wouldn’t be working at Atkins today if it were not for this organization. I met a colleague about 10 years ago at a seminar where he was instructing (a good sign), and he subsequently asked me to join the company.
In 2012, NEBB saw a need for their certified professionals to have a handbook that would help them perform Retro Commissioning (RCx) and energy audits. The majority of NEBB members are not energy engineers, so they wanted to provide a simplified approach to solving complex energy calculations. So they asked me to take the lead in writing a handbook that would help members and other interested individuals perform energy calculations. We completed the handbook and published the tool in 2015. It includes an Excel based energy calculator that provides a simplified approach to estimating energy savings for various energy conservation measures.
Working on the handbook has forced me to research and sharpen my skills to breakdown complex formulas in a simplified manner. I’ve found that nothing helps build mastery in a subject like simplification. Albert Einstein once said, “If you can’t explain it to a six year old, you don’t understand it yourself.” And while I’m sure six year olds would find it difficult to understand the theory of relativity, there are great advantages to thinking in these terms when preparing educational materials—breaking things down to their most basic parts and building them up again.
The preliminary feedback from folks using the calculator has been very positive, saying that the tool helps them perform calculations much faster and more efficiently.
Being a NEBB volunteer has taken significant commitment and does require taking personal time away from my family. Over the two-plus-year project, I’ve volunteered approximately 300 hours of personal time, but it has been an invaluable experience to work with other folks that have a passion for what they do every day. It feeds my desire for continuous education and personal growth as a professional within an industry that I truly have a passion for—making our indoor environments both healthy and energy efficient places to enjoy.
