Geotechnical engineering

As an international leading supplier of geotechnical consultancy services, Atkins offers a comprehensive service in ground technology. With more than 300 professionals, Atkins’ geotechnical reputation is built on the skills, excellence and commitment of our people in all aspects of geotechnical engineering.

Atkins has an impressive current portfolio of prestigious and diverse geotechnical projects worldwide. We operate through three technical streams: tunnelling and underground space, energy geotechnics and specialist services, and infrastructure geotechnics.

Tunnelling and underground space: We focus on mass transit and major infrastructure projects (such as Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, South Africa); engineering services for bored tunnels, including ground risk; tunnel ventilation and fire life safety; and heavy substructure engineering.

Energy geotechnics and specialist services: We provide a leading-edge geotechnical service for our clients in areas including offshore and onshore oil and gas, renewable energy (wind, current and hydro-power), low carbon engineering and nuclear power. We also provide geotechnical expert services to global clients.

Infrastructure geotechnics: We offer our traditional range of geotechnical services to the infrastructure market including the highways, rail and water sectors.

We specialise in the design of foundations and substructures at the most demanding end of the spectrum, through to the production of construction drawings and bar bending schedules.

Our capability includes modelling soil structure interactions using the finite element and finite difference methods, which give a much better understanding of soil structure behaviour than conventional methods. These techniques are essential for major projects and in situations where soil conditions and structural types are unusual. They can often help clients achieve significant savings.

Our expert and due diligence services fall into three main categories:

  • Project review and audit to project funders, including due diligence
  • Advice to insurers and their loss adjustors in claims evaluations
  • Expert witness support to lawyers involved in arbitration and litigation proceedings, including giving expert testimony if required.

We have a considerable track record, encompassing:

  • Initial feasibility studies
  • Desk studies
  • Ground investigations
  • Route optioneering
  • Feasibility design
  • Detailed design
  • Construction supervision.

Our comprehensive service in ground technology embraces:
