Success for Atkins at NCE 2015 Tunnelling Awards - 17 December 2015
Atkins has won the Fire Safety Initiative of the Year award at the 2015 NCE Tunnelling & Underground Space Award – for its work with Heathrow Airport on Heathrow Tunnel Ventilation Deflectors.
The winners were announced to the industry at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London, which brought together 500 industry leaders from across the world.
Ian Gee, practice director, Atkins, said:
“This year’s NCE Tunnelling Awards were a great success for Atkins, our work on Heathrow airport, which will benefit both the airport and its customers was recognised in winning the Fire Safety Initiative award. We were also part of the winning teams that were awarded the Global Tunnelling Project of the Year for the Bond Street upgrade (up to £500 million), and the Judges’ Supreme Award for Crossrail.
Looking forward, the skills and ingenuity of tunnelling professionals will be much in demand to deliver our future ambitious pipeline of major projects in transportation, water and energy - it’s an exciting time to be in the tunnelling industry.”
In reviewing the Atkins entry, Mark Hansford, editor of New Civil Engineer, who was on the judging panel for NCE said:
“This is a fantastic piece of work that has brought an ageing yet crucial piece of infrastructure up to standard. Innovation and creative thinking, coupled with technical excellence has created a solution that has made a substantial fire safety improvement at modest cost. Not high-tech, but a simple engineering application of established techniques in a new way. And a first in UK tunnels to boot.
“Now in their sixth year, these awards celebrate tunnelling success and recognise overall excellence in the delivery of international tunnelling projects. And our winners – and indeed all our finalists – amply illustrate the brilliance of this industry: its ability to innovate, find solutions to tough problems, and fundamentally – to crack on regardless. This week we have rewarded some fantastic projects and people. Congratulations to them all.”
