News releases 2015

The Atkins and Jacobs joint venture has been awarded the design contract for three smart motorway schemes as part of a major investment programme by Highways England to improve the roads network.

The contract, engaged under the company’s Collaborative Delivery Framework, is estimated to be valued between £20 and £25 million.

The package of work will be delivered over a period of four years and will provide new and upgraded roadside technology infrastructure. From this summer, the Atkins and Jacobs JV will undertake design activities for the M6 J13 to J15 in Staffordshire, the M20 J3 to J5 in Kent, and the M23 J8 to J10 in Surrey and West Sussex.

The smart motorway improvements will see extra lane miles added to the motorways, generating additional capacity to some of the busiest sections of the network. The hard shoulder will be converted to a traffic lane and signing technology will be used to inform drivers of what speed to take when lanes are congested. This is expected to provide a combination of greater efficiency and cost-effective benefits compared to conventional road widening methods.

Bev Waugh, major projects service director for Atkins’ Transportation division, said: “This project will upgrade heavily congested motorways to enhance journey times and reduce congestion for millions of motorists. Highways England’s investment in the smart motorways programme will go a long way to boosting productivity and supporting long-term economic growth across England. Atkins is pleased to be working with Jacobs (and other delivery partners) to deliver design capabilities for this major scheme that will ultimately manage the flow of traffic in response to driving conditions.”

Jacobs' group vice president Bob Duff stated, “These intelligent transport solutions are an important part of developing the UK’s transportation infrastructure. We are delighted to be working with Atkins and the other partners to support project delivery. Having worked with Highways England for more than 25 years, Jacobs understand Highways England’s vision for enhancing road user experience on England’s motorways.”
