Atkins has jointly won a contract with Planning and Design Institute of Nanjing University, Beijing Branch, to provide urban design for the new high-speed rail development in Shangrao, Jiangxi Province in China. Appointed by Shangrao Urban & Rural Planning Bureau, Atkins will design an urban area to help boost economic growth and transform the district of Shangrao.

The new high-speed rail district is located at the east downtown of Shangrao, six km from the city centre. The development will benefit from this close accessibility with a focus on high-end cultural and tourist attractions, whilst maintaining a balance between sustainability and economic growth. The design will incorporate the natural heritage of the city along with Chinese cultural elements.

Jessie Yao, Atkins’ project manager, said: “Our design aims at making the best use of natural city landscape. Many land plots in the area have been sold off and the fragmented environment is a planning challenge for our client. We’ve maximised the public open space in our landscape design to enable Shangrao city government more flexibility in its subsequent management. We will continue close co-operation with our client to provide consultancy support, and facilitate smooth project delivery.”

The development has adopted the eco low-carbon urban planning approach to provide green and open spaces to highlight the city’s natural beauty. A pedestrian system that encourages walking and cycling is proposed in the transport plan to promote green travel lifestyle and sustainable development of the city. A digitalised smart network will improve the efficiency of public services and quality of life of city residents.

Shangrao is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites and 21 national scenic areas. As the Shangrao high-speed railway hub will begin full operation in July 2015, the development will benefit from this link to the national railway network to help attract visitors to the city’s natural heritages.
