News releases 2015

Atkins has been awarded a contract as a consultant on a design and build contract for twin valley bridges in Denmark. The project is part of a new 39km motorway which links the cities of Herning and Holstebro on the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark and will also include the construction of an underpass beneath the motorway.

Atkins’ senior project manager, Michael Schmidt Vosgerau, said: “This is our time to make a difference and really improve connections in the area. The bridges will be located between Aulum and Holstebro and will help ease congestion, making drivers journeys easier and safer. A new hospital is being constructed in the region too and these bridges will ensure patients and their families can get to the hospital quicker.”

The 290m bridges will each carry two lanes and an emergency lane, with a division between the bridges allowing light to pass through the middle. One of the challenges to be faced during the construction of the bridge footings will be the excavation of large amounts of water from the sandy soil. A further challenge will be to mitigate against the flooding of the Storå creek beneath the bridge.

Atkins has prepared the tender design and is proceeding with the detailed design for its client, Jorton A/S. Once construction begins, Atkins’ role will include onsite supervision. The bridges are due to be completed by July 2018 for the end client, the Danish Road Directorate.
