News releases 2015

Craig Edgar, head of renewables for Atkins, will take part in the 6th North American Offshore Wind Development & Finance Summit in New York, NY, on 18 June 2015.

Craig’s session will focus on how the offshore wind industry can build on lessons learned from the oil and gas sector. He said: “There is enormous potential for offshore wind in North America, and it could provide an important contribution to providing low carbon electricity to the centres of population on both the East and West coasts of the country.

“The global offshore wind industry can learn a great deal from the oil and gas industry’s focus on increasing competitiveness through technology development and process innovation, such as advances in foundation design and fabrication.”

Atkins is deeply integrated in the offshore wind market in northern Europe, having worked on a number of fixed and floating wind projects totalling over 10GW. Atkins is working in partnership with DONG Energy to offer a standardised approach to design and fabrication for offshore substations which will help to lower the cost of offshore wind, and with clients such as Statoil and SSE on the design of monopile and jacket foundations for wind turbine generators.

Atkins is also well positioned in the North American market with offshore floating wind expertise based in Houston, including delivering the hull design for the innovative Principle Power WindFloat which uses a catenary mooring system, similar to many oil and gas designs, and can be fully assembled onshore and towed to its final destination. With over 75 offices throughout North America, Atkins is able to offer its expertise to clients wherever they are based.

Taking place over two days, the event will bring together speakers from across the industry in North America to discuss the unique value of offshore wind.
