News releases 2015

Atlanta, GA – Thirteen experts from Atkins, one of the world’s leading design, engineering, and project management consultancies, are set to present on numerous topics, moderate sessions, and conduct training workshops at next week’s 39th annual Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) Conference in Atlanta, May 31–June 5.

Throughout the course of the six-day event—the world’s largest and most comprehensive floodplain management conference—Atkins will join other flood loss reduction experts to examine the challenges facing the nation, share ideas, and learn from one another.

The 2015 conference theme is centered on mitigation, or the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Atkins’ presenters will share their experiences from working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and other partners to help communities nationwide understand their vulnerabilities to flooding and develop resiliency strategies.

In support of FEMA’s Risk MAP vision to create resilient, sustainable communities nationwide, Atkins provides engineering and technical services for the agency’s extensive flood risk mapping and hazard mitigation programs. As managing partner of the Strategic Alliance for Risk Reduction (STARR) joint venture, Atkins has helped raise flood risk awareness in local communities throughout the country, conducted more than 75 community engagement and outreach activities, and led training sessions and workshops for hundreds of participants.

Topics to be covered at the ASFPM national conference include mitigation and recovery planning, modeling techniques, stormwater management, risk awareness tools, resilience tactics, and flood mapping challenges. Atkins’ participants include:
