News releases 2016

Atkins’ Travel Demand Management team has been commissioned by Great Western Railway (GWR), to develop Station Travel Plans (STPs) for twenty stations, covering three regions on its rail network.

The project, due for completion in December 2016, will be complemented by wider station upgrade works being delivered by GWR.  The STPs will identify barriers to and opportunities for enhanced access to stations by all travel modes. They will make recommendations for small-scale interventions, such as additional or improved cycle parking and enhanced pedestrian links and wayfinding, to support sustainable access for station users.

Atkins’ project manager, Lisa Bloomer, said: “Atkins is passionate about sustainable and integrated transport and making rail travel more accessible through improved multi-modal access to stations. We’re pleased to be working in collaboration with GWR on a sustainability and accessibility led project of this type, as a great complement to our core rail engineering projects.”

STPs are an important component of GWR’s franchise obligations and demonstrate the company’s on-going commitment to integrated and sustainable transport.

Integrated transport manager at GWR, Andy Saunders said: “Allowing people to best take advantage of the benefits of travelling by train and identifying opportunities for improvement is key for GWR as we deliver the most significant investment on the Great Western in a generation. Committed to supporting the communities we serve, these travel plans help us to provide the very best facilities, assisting passengers as they make their way to and from our stations.”
