News releases 2016

Atkins has helped to secure over £18 million of sustainable transport funding for local authorities and their partners since 2012.

To date, the company has supported eight local authorities, including Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Peterborough and Portsmouth, to secure Sustainable Transport Transition funding, and its predecessor, the Local Sustainable Transport Fund. The funding is used to finance the development and implementation of smarter travel solutions.

The transition fund, provided by the Department for Transport, will help to deliver projects that cut congestion, improve local air quality and facilitate access to jobs and education. There is also a particular focus on working in partnership with local public health teams to implement walking and cycling initiatives.

Chris Hanley, transportation practice manager, said: “Atkins will continue to deliver successful sustainable transport projects that add innovation and efficiency, whilst achieving up to 10% mode shift towards sustainable travel modes. We are pleased to have worked on a range of projects that build and promote sustainable transport infrastructure and bring about real change to local communities; including Peterborough’s pioneering Cyclefriendly project and working in collaboration with local Job Centres to improve access to new work opportunities for jobseekers in Hampshire.”

A total of 23 local authorities across England have been awarded transition funding for this year.
