Atkins’ Calgary-based oil and gas team is hosting the next safety and risk management seminar on facility siting at the Aquitaine Tower on 15 September.

The safety and risk management seminars are aimed at sharing knowledge on technical issues with a wide audience and create an opportunity for all attendees to network with others in the industry. This seminar, hosted by James Loudoun and Sam Sanati, will discuss how to understand and control the risk of nearby populations from some of the major accidents hazards that are associated with a new facility.

The presentation will also address land use planning issues that may arise when developments are planned in the vicinity of existing major hazard installations and pipelines. The main methodologies and techniques involved will be summarised, and an overview will be provided on how various regulators make decisions in relation to facility siting and land use planning. A case study will be presented that will explain the wide variety of risk criteria that are used for facility siting.

Ben Woodcock, business manager in Atkins’ Calgary office, said: “Over the last four years our quarterly seminars have been hugely popular with our clients and associates in the city. The seminars are aimed at communicating an approach to integrating process safety and structural integrity disciplines into operations and projects. Following a technical presentation we engage in a lively discussion. We have a knowledgeable audience in attendance and I think everyone goes back to work in the afternoon with appetites for both information and lunch satisfied.”
