News releases 2017

Thirteen experts from Atkins, one of the world’s leading design, engineering and project management consultancies, will present topics, moderate sessions and teach workshops at this year’s Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) Conference in Kansas City, Missouri, April 30–May 5.

Atkins will join other flood reduction experts to improve preparedness in local communities by helping practitioners sharpen skills and learn approaches that minimize flood risks, reduce losses from floods, and protect public health and safety at the six-day conference.

Using Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) predicted rainfall data for the state of Missouri, presenters Thomas Schweitzer and Vikram Shrivastava will demonstrate how Atkins can develop expected floodplain and depth grid information. The presentation will contribute to the larger discussion on using FEMA’s flood hazard risk and assessment models for timely disaster response, both in advance of and after an event takes place.

“The misperception that FEMA’s flood hazard information is primarily for securing flood insurance often prevents use of this data for flood risk awareness in communities,” said Don McEvoy, Atkins senior division manager and FEMA programs lead. “Showing how accurate our predictive models can be by using FEMA’s flood hazard data, we can start improving preparedness and develop more effective disaster response.”

Deemed by ASFPM as the world’s largest floodplain management conference, this year’s theme is focused on managing flood risk in America’s heartland. Atkins presenters will share their experiences working with federal, state and local agencies in helping communities understand their vulnerabilities to flooding. They will also explore new approaches for bringing experts and community members together to address water management issues, develop mitigation tools and increase resiliency.

Topics to be covered at the ASFPM national conference include master planning, resiliency tactics, public outreach, emergency management, flood mapping challenges and environmental compliance.
