News releases 2017

Jessica Rogers, a senior mechanical engineer in Atkins’ Energy UK & Europe business, has been awarded the Stephenson Award for 2017 by The Worshipful Company of Engineers and The Engineers Trust. The prize is given to an individual who has demonstrated success and a commitment to promoting engineering to young people.

Jessica was recognised for her STEM work across Europe and the US. Her work began at university where, as a member of the Society for Women Engineers, Jessica started an event for young girls to learn about STEM careers through activities and fun experiments. When Jessica moved to Germany in 2009, she continued to hold her WOW! That’s Engineering! events, this time with the Girl Scout Troop on the UK military base in Wiesbaden.

She said: “I am truly humbled and honoured to be recognised for this work and I would like to say thank you to everyone who has helped make all the STEM and Outreach programmes I’ve started become a success over the years. This award is as much theirs as it is mine.”

After joining Atkins in 2014, Jessica set to work promoting engineering to the younger generation, setting up the Young Engineers & Scientists (YES) Programme in Epsom, which invited students to visit the Atkins office after school, once a month for eight months, and learn about careers related to a range of STEM disciplines through fun and interactive experiments. Having equal numbers of boys and girls enrolled in the programme is a requirement for the programme in an effort to increase diversity in the profession.
