News releases 2017

Atkins, one of the world’s most respected design, engineering and project management consultancies, has been awarded a contract worth approximately £9 million to upgrade the signalling capability in the South of Cornwall, as part of the Cornwall Capacity Enabling Scheme for Network Rail.

Atkins will be responsible for the upgrade work of the signalling system between Truro and St Erth throughout GRIP stages 4b-8 of the project, from its detailed design through to its construction, installation, testing, commissioning and entry into service prior to the introduction of the winter 2018 timetable.

Stephen Mills, senior project manager, transportation at Atkins, said: “ A range of in-house disciplines will be deployed, including signalling and telecommunications, power supplies, permanent way and civil engineering services, to implement 12 new signals and upgrade seven level crossings.”

These enhancement works will dramatically improve local connectivity for passengers, enabling one extra train per hour between Plymouth and Penzance.

Richard Evans, programme manager at Network Rail, said: “The upgrade work is an exciting development for the communities of South Cornwall, as this part of larger strategy to enable more frequent services to and from Truro from late 2018 onwards.”

Atkins has a long-standing pedigree in the delivery of end-to-end signalling solutions which help to maximise the capacity of the UK’s existing rail infrastructure, moving passengers more quickly and reliably from A to B. Industry recognised for its expertise in this space, it has the in-house capability to respond with agility to the requirements of both large and small projects nationally.
