News releases 2017

The Transport Scotland Asset Management Improvement Programme won the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) Asset Management Award at the prestigious annual CIHT Awards ceremony, in London, on 15 June 2017.

The award-winning programme was delivered by Transport Scotland with support from Atkins, one of the world’s most respected design, engineering, and project management firms. It provides a robust platform upon which digital asset management practices are continually reviewed, challenged and improved. This involves continuously exploring new ways of using digital solutions to shape transport requirements for the future.

The outcomes of the programme have enabled Transport Scotland to develop a clear, long term strategy to manage the Scottish trunk road network. This has resulted in additional government funding of £50 million investment in the trunk road asset in 2016/17 and 2017/18.

Transport Scotland’s use of effective asset management demonstrated their ability to provide a well evidenced business case. This combined with a positive record of delivering value for money through capital maintenance works, was critical to securing this increased funding.

Lila Tachtsi, Atkins Fellow for asset management said: "I am delighted to win this award with Transport Scotland. We have put in place a clear strategy that is supported by the leadership team and we are using technology and digital enablers to ensure the delivery of this strategy.

“The award recognises that our approach has embedded good asset management in Transport Scotland and we can now demonstrate the benefits in terms of secured funding, network condition and customer communication.

“This is what good digital asset management is all about.”

The Atkins approach to asset management combines advisory and digital services to enable organisations to manage their assets and systems in a sustainable way, to optimise their performance and minimise risk and expenditure over the lifecycle of assets.
