Tammy Sims, PE, has joined Atkins’ Department of Transportation business unit as project director for the tolls sector. She brings 30 years of transportation management experience, 27 of them with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

Sims is currently serving as project director for the North Texas Tollway Authority and North East Texas Regional Mobility Authority general engineering consultant contracts, providing leadership, direction, and technical guidance to further engineering services.

“Tammy takes an integrated approach when tackling the challenges of an aging infrastructure and improving traveler mobility,” said Alastair Miller, PE, Atkins vice president and senior tolls division manager. “Her successes in developing the Texas statewide maintenance program, and pavement management and emergency management projects, will help elevate our services to toll agencies in the state.”

Throughout her career, Sims has provided guidance on multimillion dollar bridge replacement projects, major highway rehabilitation, increased capacity, pavement preservation, traffic signal and safety widening projects. She has led TxDOT offices in Greenville and Sulphur Springs.

Sims’ professional honors include the University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Transportation Research Mac Shelby Award and a prestigious nomination for the Governor’s Award for Women in Texas Government. Her board appointments include the Texas Pavement Preservation Center, the Federal Highway Administration’s Pavement Preservation Expert Task Committee and the Southeast Pavement Preservation Partnership.

Sims earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and is based in Atkins’ Tyler, Texas, office.
