Malmö Municipality’s Streets Department invited a number of consultants to participate in a competition to develop a Habitability Index for the streets and spaces of the city of Malmö in southern Sweden.

The Index is a weighted average of quantative parameters which make qualified and measurable judgements on the attractiveness of being in a given street or space in the city.

The qualification stage of the competition invited the consultants to devise methods of establishing parameters which are well adapted to the specific conditions of the city.

Of the four selected from the qualification stages, Atkins have been selected to be one of the two remaining ‘finalists’ that are working on the current work stage; to test and refine the Index in a selected group of sample area, and to determine the cost of applying the Index to the whole (or larger part of) of the city.
