When did you join Atkins?

Actually I’ve joined the company twice – in 1991 and 1994.

Why did you join Atkins?

First time round I worked for Lister Drew Haines Barrow in Aberdeen which was acquired by Atkins. Then I took a couple of years out working in Glasgow. I was then invited to return to run the architectural team and I accepted because I like the multidiscipline approach.

What did you do before you joined Atkins?

Educated in Aberdeen where I took my architecture degree, I worked in private practice on a variety of projects. I had a varied early career in design, site work and management, also I ran a design and build business with two friends and worked as a site architect for the Shell headquarters in Aberdeen.

How do you describe what you do to friends and family?

I’m the resident director of our Qatar office; we mainly work on roads and rail infrastructure projects.

Do you have any professional accreditations?

I’m a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS).

What are you currently working on?

Qatar has won the hosting of the 2022 World Cup which has opened floodgate of activity here. Qatar has a healthy GDP and it is planning to spend a lot on road, rail, the airport, the port, a causeway, hotels and the football stadia. Right now we’re mainly working on infrastructure projects, for example, the new metro which is coming to Doha and the Achladi township for Kuwait Oil Company.

What achievement are you most proud?

I work on so many diverse projects it’s difficult to say, we involved in lots of exciting adventures along the way. I get the most pleasure winning projects and delivering on them as it’s a tough environment here.

What’s the most technically challenging project you’ve worked on here?

A tier 4 data centre in Qatar, due diligence on Barts and Royal London Hospital in the UK and LUL Metro.

How has your career developed at Atkins?

I’ve run businesses within the overall business. I’ve been supported notably by two directors, in Scotland and here in the Middle East. Working at Atkins is a team game and support is part of that experience.

How do directors and Atkins make a difference?

Here it’s about creating a solid team in this tough environment. Working closely with clients and delivering good products and services to them.

How would you describe the culture at Atkins?

It feels like a large ‘family’ and friendly.
