When did you join Atkins?

I joined the company in September 2008 immediately after graduating from Nottingham University with a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Manufacture.

Why did you join Atkins?

I saw a company presentation about Atkins at a university careers fair and decided to apply for the graduate scheme. When I attended the assessment day, I was attracted to the company’s focus and values for their employees. I also felt that there was professional but relaxed atmosphere. It’s a very accessible place to work.

Describe your role and responsibilities

I am a developing engineer working in the aerospace division. I have just completed an 18-month role supporting an Airbus project where I worked on flight control system installations and worked as part of a transnational team developing and verifying the system installation design principles on the next generation long-range jetliner.

What key projects have you worked on?

Airbus development programmes, advanced composite research project, Rolls Royce in-service support.

What are you currently working on?

I am working on the Airbus A320 Sharklet project as part of the design and integration team.

What achievement are you most proud of?

My proudest achievement since joining at Atkins is supporting Airbus on a fuel systems installation design tool for which the client is now considering raising a patent.

How has your career developed at Atkins?

I have become a more rounded and experienced engineer while working at Atkins. I have had the opportunity to work on stress based, design and research roles.

How were you supported through this?

I have been provided with appropriate training and support from my colleagues and the client for the projects I have been involved in. Atkins has also recognised how I have developed and given me a lot of responsibility and the opportunities to excel.

How do engineers and Atkins make a difference?

At Atkins, engineers have the ability to grow more rounded and technically capable. We learn how to be good communicators. There are opportunities to make a difference to others within the community through engaging in groups such as engineering awareness, horizons and student mentoring.
