Background

When did you join Atkins?

I joined the company mid July 2010 after completing my bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

Why did you join Atkins?

I consider it an honour to work at one of the world’s best infrastructure design consultancies.

Describe your role and responsibilities:

I work with the network development team in the water & environment business.

My role is to assess about 40 customer applications a month looking at the adoption and diversion of sewers and other apparatus. I check if the applications comply with the standards set out by the Water Industry Act, 1991; checking for capacity in sewers and water mains after these have been modelled; and checking on the effects of any construction on the public apparatus and responding accordingly.

Career development

What’s your proudest achievement at Atkins?

Working in a team which deals directly with the client is the best part and my proudest achievement at Atkins was being part of the team who were not only nominated for an Atkins’ Customer Focus Award but who also brought the trophy back home.

How has your career developed at Atkins?

Atkins has given me excellent opportunities to work across various disciplines on different projects. My role has progressed during the short time I’ve been here and I’ve taken on much more responsibility.

How were you supported through this?

From top management to lower levels, graduates are supported along the way and I find it very easy to approach others for help and advice.

The Atkins factor

Why do you like working at Atkins?

Atkins gives its employees excellent opportunities to work on a variety of projects including low carbon projects. And the best part is when you say to someone that you work at Atkins, they are very impressed as it’s a well known company.

What don’t you like about working here?

I hate the long queues that form at the elevators during peak office hours.

How does Atkins support your local community? Are you personally involved?

Atkins is involved in corporate social responsibility, supporting organisations such as Sukrupa, Habitat for Humanity and Friends in Need. I get involved in fundraising opportunities where I can.
