Almada Docks

Portugal | SECTOR: Urban Development

The work on the Almada Docks in Lisbon, Portugal is one of the most extensive dockland regeneration projects within Europe, covering a site of 150 hectares. Almada’s rebirth will centralise and create a feature of the River Tagus.

Atkins developed an overall urban design masterplan and urban planning framework based on sustainable urban design principles. We also carried out the detailed investigation, identification, and remediation of the contaminated site prior to development.

Community involvement throughout the project has been key. A wide range of initiatives was rolled out to ensure everyone who wanted to take an active role could be involved with the development of the masterplan. The process has, in effect, been a collective education for consultants, client and community. It has resulted in a genuine depth of understanding, by all involved, of philosophical and social constraints and opportunities, matched with environmental, geological and geotechnical knowledge.
