Atkins secures design contract in China - 12 June 2009

Atkins China has been appointed by Hong Kong’s MTR Corporation to carry out the detailed design of a key section of their South Island Line (East) project.

The South Island Line (East) is a new 7km long medium capacity railway to serve the Southern District of Hong Kong, connecting with the existing railway network at Admiralty Station.  The line will run in a combination of underground sections and on elevated structures, with five new stations also being constructed.

The consultancy covers the elevated section of the line comprising 2km of viaducts, a new bridge over Aberdeen Harbour and two new stations at Wong Chuk Hang and Ocean Park.

A key aspect of the design will be to ensure that the visual impacts of the above ground structures are sensitively treated.

Atkins is currently carrying out a number of design assignments on various new lines which are being progressed by the MTR Corporation as part of a major expansion of its railway network.
