Penang Bridge Stay Replacement

Malaysia | SECTOR: Roads

Atkins’ award winning cable replacement scheme has ensured the only physical link between the island of Penang and the Malaysian mainland is maintained.

The Penang Bridge is one of the longest bridges in the world at 13.5 kilometres and is vital for business and leisure traffic. It comprises of a cable-stayed main span of 225 metres and over 530 spans of approach viaducts. When structural assessment showed that the main cables were overstressed and acoustic monitoring detected bar breakage, Atkins’ bridge engineers designed a cable replacement scheme that reduced construction risk and was eight times quicker to build than conventional replacement methods. Atkins’ work on the project won the Innovation in Bridges category at the 2010 Bentley Be Inspired Awards.
